Malachi (God's Messenger-Farewell Speech) ***************** 1) Circumstances of the written period: In the Old Testament, the book of Malachi ends with the word "curse" (curse- KJV). To the Jewish people, this was God's message of farewell and seemed like a book written for today's Christian society. God remained silent until the Voice of John the Baptist was heard in the wilderness 400 years after this book. It has been 100 years since the Jewish people came to Jerusalem from 70 years of Babylonian slavery. It's been the 3rd and 4th generations. In Babylon, the Jews, unlike slavery in Egypt, built houses, planted vineyards, traded, and prospered. Only 3-5% of the Jews returned. Things are not so exciting in Jerusalem now. They do not have the enthusiasm (fire) of those who came in the beginning. The word Malachi means messenger. The book was written between 432 and 425 B.C. Jerusalem was not much inhabited and empty.
