Know The Book of Zephaniah ***************** This book was written by "Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah" (Zeph 1:1). The time of its writing was "in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah" (Zeph 1:1). Hezekiah was the last good king to rule Judah. His great-grandsons were King Josiah and Zephaniah. Zephaniah belonged to the royal lineage. Therefore, he had the privilege of easy access to the palace. He is an important prophet because he is the only prophet whose genealogy is traced back to four generations, making him unique. The name Zephaniah means "Jehovah Hides". King Josiah ruled Judah from 640 – 609 BC. Given that Manasseh "made his son pass through the fire" (Sacrificed his own son in fire) (2 Kgs 21:6), so this name might have been given to Zephaniah because God hid and protected him from Manasseh.
